Chew on This-Agave Nectar
I’ve been trying to find a nice sugar substitute for the longest time and I think I may have finally found one in Agave Nectar. I’d read up about it on the net and thought I was in trouble when reading it describes as a product that tastes like sugar, isn’t that said about everything! Still trying to figure out how Splenda tastes like sugar and perhaps it’s just the afte taste that won’t allow me to agree with that claim.
Here are some details from the Wholesome Sweeteners site, this is the particular brand I purchased however no the only one that offers Agave Nectar:
Wholesome Sweeteners Organic Raw Blue Agave nectar is a low-glycemic sweetener produced from organically grown and processed Blue Agave (Agave tequilana var. Weber) plants. The “Weber Azul” is a cactus-like plant that grows in the Jalisco region of Mexico; it’s been used for more than 5000 years to sustain the region’s inhabitants. Organic Raw Blue Agave offers natural sweetness without the blood sugar spike. This sweet, mild nectar is a perfect multi-purpose sweetener for beverages, fresh fruit and general table-top use. With a glycemic index of 39 or less, it is the preferred sweetener of many diabetics and those trying to control their blood sugar.
My Review
The first thing I tried this sweetener with was lemonade, I forewarned myself that if I didn’t like it to give it a second try being it takes loads of sugar to sweeten lemonade, let alone some product I’m trying for the first time. Needless to say that batch of lemonade only made it’s way to tolerable status, never mmm this is good. The next time I had it in my oatmeal where now I can say mmm this is good, wow this actually does taste like sugar and finally I have a sweetener I can use that isn’t table sugar. I don’t think anything will perfectly replace the taste of sugar for me but this is definitely in the good enough category. Will try out stevia if ever I find a reasonable enough price for it!
